Cydia – Install Cydia from Sileo on iPhone & iPad

The classic package manager.
A compatibility-first guide.

Go to installation ↓

Cydia is one of the best-known package managers in the iPhone jailbreak community. It gives a jailbroken device access to repositories containing tweaks, themes, utilities, libraries, and other packages that are not distributed through Apple's App Store.

If you already use Sileo, you may be wondering whether you can install Cydia alongside it.

Yes, Cydia can be installed from Sileo in some compatible jailbreak environments, but Cydia itself does not jailbreak an iPhone. Your device must already have a compatible jailbreak, and the Cydia package you install must support that jailbreak's architecture and bootstrap.

This guide explains how Cydia and Sileo work together, how to install a compatible Cydia package through Sileo, what to check before installation, and whether you actually need Cydia if you already use Sileo.

Quick answer: Already have a working Sileo installation? You don't need to remove Sileo just because you want to try Cydia. First confirm that the Cydia build supports your jailbreak and iOS environment, then install it from a compatible repository through Sileo.

Can You Install Cydia from Sileo?

It is possible to install a compatible Cydia package through Sileo when your existing jailbreak environment supports it.

Sileo and Cydia perform a similar fundamental job: they are package managers used to access repositories and manage packages on jailbroken iPhones and iPads.

That means installing Cydia does not create a jailbreak.

Before trying to install Cydia, you should already have:

  • A compatible jailbroken iPhone or iPad
  • A working jailbreak environment
  • Sileo installed and opening correctly
  • Working Sileo sources
  • A Cydia package built for your jailbreak architecture
  • Enough understanding of your jailbreak to avoid incompatible packages

If you haven't installed Sileo yet, start with our Sileo installation guide before continuing.

How to Install Cydia from Sileo

The exact availability of Cydia depends on the jailbreak and repository being used. Don't install an old Cydia package simply because you find a DEB file online.

A package designed for an older rootful jailbreak may not work correctly in a modern rootless environment.

Step 1: Open Sileo

Launch Sileo on your jailbroken iPhone or iPad.

Allow your sources to refresh completely before making changes. If Sileo itself cannot refresh repositories or install packages, fix that problem before attempting to add another package manager.

Step 2: Open Sources

Select Sources inside Sileo.

Repositories—often simply called repos or sources—are where jailbreak packages are hosted.

If the Cydia build you intend to use is distributed through a compatible repository, this is where you add it.

Need help with repositories?

See our Sileo repositories and sources guide → ↗

Step 3: Add the Compatible Cydia Repository

Tap the option to add a new source and enter the repository URL supplied by the Cydia package developer or maintainer.

Let Sileo refresh the repository completely.

Do not assume every website advertising a "Cydia download" provides a package compatible with your device. Check the package's source, architecture, version, dependencies, and stated jailbreak support before installation.

Step 4: Find Cydia

After the repository refreshes, search for Cydia inside Sileo.

Open the package information rather than immediately tapping Install/Get.

Check:

  • Package version
  • Required iOS version
  • Rootless or rootful support
  • Package architecture
  • Required dependencies
  • Repository/source
  • Developer or maintainer information

If these details don't match your jailbreak environment, don't install the package.

Step 5: Install Cydia

If the Cydia package is compatible, select Get/Install and review Sileo's installation queue.

Pay particular attention if Sileo proposes removing important bootstrap components or other essential packages.

Confirm the installation only when the changes are expected.

Step 6: Respring If Required

Allow Sileo to complete the installation.

If you're asked to respring, do so after the package installation finishes.

Cydia should then appear on the Home Screen if the package and jailbreak environment are working correctly.

Step 7: Open Cydia

Launch Cydia and allow its repositories and package information to load.

The first refresh may take some time depending on the sources configured in Cydia.

Don't immediately add dozens of old Cydia repositories. Start with repositories that are active and compatible with your current jailbreak.

What Is Cydia?

Cydia is a package manager historically associated with jailbroken iPhones, iPads, and iPod touch devices.

For many years, installing Cydia was almost synonymous with jailbreaking an iPhone.

Instead of distributing ordinary App Store applications, Cydia primarily provides access to jailbreak repositories. Those repositories can contain software capable of modifying parts of iOS that normal App Store applications cannot change.

Depending on your jailbreak and iOS version, packages may include:

  • Interface tweaks
  • Themes
  • Lock Screen modifications
  • Control Center customization
  • Status Bar modifications
  • System utilities
  • File-management tools
  • Libraries and dependencies
  • Developer utilities

Modern package managers such as Sileo now provide much of the same fundamental repository and package-management functionality through a newer interface.

How Does Cydia Work?

Cydia acts as a front end for the package-management system used in a jailbreak environment.

Instead of relying on one centralized store, Cydia uses repositories.

A repository hosts packages and the metadata necessary for a package manager to find them.

The basic process looks like this:

  • Jailbreak → Package Manager → Repository → Package → Installation

For example, a developer may publish a jailbreak tweak in their repository.

You add that repository to Cydia, Sileo, or another compatible package manager, refresh its package list, find the tweak, and install it.

This is why the repository itself matters just as much as the package manager.

What Is a Cydia Repo?

A Cydia repo, also called a Cydia repository or Cydia source, is a server that distributes jailbreak packages.

Cydia does not contain every tweak itself.

Instead, developers and repository maintainers host packages in their own sources. Cydia downloads information from those sources and presents the available packages to you.

Many repositories can also work with modern package managers such as Sileo because both ecosystems use compatible package repository standards.

Always check that a repository is still maintained before installing its packages.

Cydia vs Sileo: What's the Difference?

Cydia and Sileo are both package managers, but they come from different generations of the jailbreak community.

Is Sileo Better Than Cydia?

For many modern jailbreak setups, Sileo is the more practical primary package manager because it was designed around newer jailbreak environments and provides a modern package-browsing experience.

Cydia, however, remains important to the history of jailbreaking and may appeal to experienced users who prefer its traditional interface.

The better choice ultimately depends on:

  • Your jailbreak
  • Your iOS version
  • Rootless/rootful architecture
  • Repository compatibility
  • Package compatibility
  • Personal preference

If your jailbreak officially provides or recommends Sileo, there is usually no reason to replace it purely because Cydia is more familiar.

Can You Use Cydia and Sileo Together?

In compatible environments, it may be possible to have both Cydia and Sileo installed.

But having two package managers does not make an incompatible tweak compatible with your jailbreak.

Both applications ultimately interact with packages, repositories, dependencies, and components belonging to the underlying jailbreak environment.

For that reason, avoid making conflicting package changes simultaneously.

If you install Cydia through Sileo, keeping Sileo available can also be useful in case you need to manage or remove the Cydia package later.

Cydia Rootless Support

This is particularly important for users of newer jailbreaks.

Historically, jailbreaks generally had broad access to the root filesystem. Modern jailbreak development has increasingly adopted rootless environments.

A package created for an older rootful jailbreak cannot automatically be assumed to work on a rootless jailbreak.

This affects Cydia as well as the tweaks you install through it.

Before installing a Cydia build on a rootless jailbreak, verify that the package specifically supports your environment.

The same rule applies to Cydia tweaks.

A package appearing inside Cydia doesn't guarantee that it is compatible with your iOS version or jailbreak.

Cydia Tweaks

One of the main reasons people use Cydia is to discover and install jailbreak tweaks.

Tweaks can modify the appearance or behavior of iOS beyond what Apple normally provides.

Examples include modifications for:

  • Home Screen layouts
  • Icons and themes
  • App interfaces
  • Animations
  • Notifications
  • Control Center
  • Lock Screen
  • Status Bar
  • System gestures

If you're using Sileo, you don't necessarily need Cydia to access these types of packages.

Many modern tweaks and themes can be installed directly through Sileo.

Can Cydia Install Sileo?

This works in the opposite direction as well on supported jailbreak environments.

If Cydia is already your working package manager and your jailbreak supports Sileo, Sileo may be installable by adding its repository to Cydia and installing the appropriate Sileo package.

However, package-manager installation methods can change between jailbreaks.

Use the method recommended for your particular jailbreak rather than assuming instructions written for another iOS version or bootstrap will work.

Cydia Download: Do You Need an IPA?

This is an area where users can easily become confused.

Searching for Cydia download often leads to websites offering profiles, IPA files, web clips, or applications claiming to install Cydia without a jailbreak.

Traditional Cydia is fundamentally associated with a jailbreak package-management environment.

Simply placing a Cydia-looking icon on your Home Screen does not give an ordinary non-jailbroken iPhone the system access expected from a real jailbreak package manager.

If you're using Sileo inside an existing jailbreak, obtaining a compatible package through a known repository is generally more meaningful than downloading an unexplained "Cydia IPA" from an unknown website.

Does Cydia Jailbreak an iPhone?

No.

Cydia is a package manager, not a jailbreak.

This distinction is important.

A jailbreak provides the environment and permissions that allow jailbreak packages to operate.

Cydia or Sileo then provides an interface for finding and managing those packages.

Think of it as:

Jailbreak = underlying environment

Cydia/Sileo = package-management interface

Installing a Cydia icon by itself therefore doesn't mean an iPhone has been jailbroken.

Can You Install Cydia Without Jailbreak?

A website, profile, or sideloaded application may use the Cydia name or resemble its interface, but that doesn't automatically provide the capabilities of Cydia running inside a true jailbreak environment.

The packages people traditionally associate with Cydia often require system-level capabilities unavailable to normal iOS applications.

If your goal is installing real jailbreak tweaks, first determine whether your device and iOS version have a compatible jailbreak.

Cydia Sources and Repositories

Repositories determine what packages appear inside Cydia.

Instead of adding every source you find online, focus on maintained repositories offering packages compatible with your jailbreak.

Modern repositories may support several package managers, including:

  • Cydia
  • Sileo
  • Zebra

A repository being accepted by Cydia does not guarantee that every package inside it works on your device.

Always check the individual package compatibility.

Cydia Not Working After Installation?

If Cydia installs from Sileo but doesn't work correctly, don't immediately reinstall it repeatedly.

Start with these checks.

Cydia Doesn't Open

Confirm that the Cydia build supports your jailbreak architecture and iOS environment.

If Cydia immediately crashes, the package may be incompatible or a required dependency may be missing.

Cydia Sources Won't Refresh

A repository may be offline, outdated, incorrectly entered, or incompatible.

Try identifying the specific source producing the error rather than removing unrelated packages.

Packages Don't Appear

Allow the sources to finish refreshing.

If a particular tweak still doesn't appear, confirm that its repository has been added and that the repository still distributes the package.

Cydia Tweak Won't Install

Check the tweak's:

  • iOS compatibility
  • Architecture
  • Rootless/rootful support
  • Dependencies
  • Conflicting packages

Don't force-install an incompatible package simply to bypass an error.

Sileo Stops Working

Installing another package manager should not be treated as a reason to remove important Sileo or jailbreak components.

If an installation queue proposes unexpected removals, cancel it and investigate before proceeding.

Is Cydia Safe?

Cydia itself and every package distributed through a repository are separate considerations.

A package manager cannot guarantee that every third-party repository or tweak is trustworthy.

Jailbreaking also changes Apple's normal security model.

Reduce unnecessary risk by:

  • Using reputable repositories
  • Checking package developers
  • Avoiding pirated repositories
  • Reading compatibility information
  • Avoiding unexplained DEB/IPA downloads
  • Keeping the number of unnecessary sources low
  • Not forcing incompatible dependencies

Treat packages capable of changing system behavior with appropriate caution.

Should You Switch from Sileo to Cydia?

If Sileo already works well with your jailbreak, you probably don't need to switch.

Cydia can be useful if you specifically want the traditional Cydia experience or have a compatible reason to use it.

For most users, however, package compatibility matters more than which package manager's interface they prefer.

Before switching, ask:

Does my jailbreak support this Cydia build?

Do the tweaks I want actually require Cydia?

Can the same repository be used in Sileo?

Does installing Cydia offer something my existing Sileo setup doesn't?

If the answer to the last three questions is no, keeping Sileo as your primary package manager is usually the simpler option.

Cydia FAQ

What is Cydia?

Cydia is a package manager associated with jailbroken Apple devices. It allows users to access repositories containing jailbreak tweaks, themes, utilities, libraries, and other packages.

Can I install Cydia from Sileo?

A compatible Cydia package can be installed through Sileo in supported jailbreak environments. Compatibility depends on the jailbreak, architecture, Cydia build, and its dependencies.

Is Cydia a jailbreak?

No. Cydia is a package manager. Your device needs a compatible jailbreak environment before traditional jailbreak packages can work.

Is Cydia still available?

Cydia remains an important part of jailbreak history, and compatible/community-maintained builds may exist for particular environments. However, modern jailbreaks commonly use newer package managers such as Sileo.

Is Cydia free?

Cydia itself has historically been available as a package manager without requiring users to purchase the application. Individual packages and tweaks distributed through repositories may be free or paid.

Is Sileo the same as Cydia?

No. They are different package managers, although they perform many of the same fundamental tasks, such as refreshing repositories and installing jailbreak packages.

Can I have Cydia and Sileo at the same time?

Some compatible jailbreak environments can support multiple package managers. Don't assume this applies to every jailbreak, and avoid removing essential packages simply to make another package manager work.

Can I add Cydia repos to Sileo?

Many repositories using compatible APT repository formats can work with both package managers. However, individual packages inside those repositories may have different iOS or jailbreak requirements.

Does Cydia work on rootless jailbreaks?

Only a Cydia build specifically compatible with the relevant rootless environment should be used. An old rootful Cydia package should not automatically be assumed to work.

Can I download Cydia without a computer?

The important requirement isn't necessarily the computer—it is whether the device has the appropriate jailbreak/package environment. A web page that places a Cydia icon on an ordinary iPhone is not equivalent to installing a functional jailbreak package manager.

Do I need Cydia if I already have Sileo?

Usually not. Sileo can already install compatible packages from supported repositories. Install Cydia only when your jailbreak supports it and you have a specific reason to use it.

Which is better: Cydia or Sileo?

Sileo is generally better suited to modern jailbreak environments and users wanting a newer interface. Cydia provides the classic package-manager experience familiar to longtime jailbreak users. Compatibility with your jailbreak should matter more than appearance.

Final Thoughts

Cydia played a defining role in the history of iPhone jailbreaking, but today's jailbreak ecosystem offers several package managers.

If you're already using Sileo, installing Cydia should be a compatibility decision rather than a requirement.

Start by confirming your jailbreak architecture and Cydia package support. If a compatible Cydia build is available, Sileo can act as the package manager used to obtain it. If not, continue using Sileo rather than forcing an outdated Cydia package onto an unsupported environment.

Whichever package manager you choose, pay close attention to the repositories and tweaks you install. The package manager is only one part of the jailbreak environment—the compatibility and quality of individual packages matter just as much.
